Local group secures

Grass Roots Renewables has received a £250,000 loan from Ulster Community Investment Trust (UCIT) which has helped fund a new 250KW wind turbine at Tirkane, outside Maghera.

Grass Roots Renewables is part of the Carntogher Community Association and has been formed to deliver a renewable energy project. Carntogher Community Association promotes a range of economic, social, cultural and environmental projects and has established a number of social enterprises.

The project will generate income which will help to contribute to sustaining a range of community developments. Some of the local groups to benefit will include the Community Association, two preschool nurseries and the local GAA club.

Niall O’Kane, Director of Carntogher Community Association noted that:
"The project will have a positive impact socially, environmentally and economically with all profits generated being reinvested into local community projects with no dividends paid to shareholders."

Mr O'Kane also said the support of UCIT was crucial: "We approached UCIT for a loan because we felt they shared our beliefs and are community focused. Their support and enthusiasm has been instrumental in the construction of this turbine."
